Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains materials documenting the life and professional activities of Dr. Ichitaro Katsuki, an 1896 UCSF School of Medicine graduate. It contains his diploma, class notes, a photograph, a textbook, a box of glass slides, and a copy of his memoirs dictated to his family in the 1960s.

Biographical / historical:

Ichitaro Katsuki was born in Kanazawa, Japan, in 1865. He entered the University of California Medical School in 1893 and graduated with honors in 1896, one of the first Japanese to receive a degree from that institution. In 1900, the San Francisco Board of Health sent him to Honolulu as a special representative to investigate the bubonic plague then raging in Hawaii. He subsequently chose to remain in Honolulu as a general practitioner. Dr. Katsuki died at age 101 in 1967.
