Biographical / Historical
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences was founded in 1927 as an organization to innovate within the motion picture
industry. Its original 36 members included production executives and film luminaries of the time, brought together by Louis
B. Mayer. Members represent the many professional areas of the motion picture industry are organized into 17 branches – Actors,
Casting Directors, Cinematographers, Costume Designers, Directors, Documentary, Executives, Film Editors, Makeup Artists and
Hairstylists, Marketing and Public Relations, Music, Producers, Production Design, Short Films and Feature Animation, Sound,
Visual Effects and Writers.
Scope and Contents
This collection includes publicity stills and other photographs, slides, and stills for the marketing of motion pictures and
theatre productions from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Beverly Hills location. The bulk of the collection
consists of film stills from various motion pictures ranging from the 1910s to the 1990s. Materials also include stills from
motion pictures from Paramount, Samuel Goldwyn, Cecil B. DeMille, Warren Newcombe, along with an extensive amount of stills
from the motion picture
Around the World in 80 Days (1956).
