Background

Scope and content:

The Teatro de las Chicanas Photograph Collection (ca. 1970s) is comprised of visual images of the theater group Teatro de las Chicanas. Photographs include live performances, candid shots of the company, as well as photographs of advertising materials.

Biographical / historical:

Teatro de las Chicanas is a grass-roots theater troupe formed at San Diego State University in 1971. The student-run organization was co-founded by Felicitas Nuñez and Delia Ravelo. Teatro de las Chicanas is a political theater group of Chicana women that use acting as a medium to address social, political, and gender issues affecting Chicana/os.

Part of the Chicano teatro street movement that emerged in the 1960s, Teatro de las Chicanas performed at a variety of venues throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including political rallies, anti-war demonstrations, high school gyms and community centers. The group put on short plays addressing issues of the day, including immigration, discrimination in public schools, police brutality, and the developing feminist movement.

In 2010, Felicitas Nuñez, along with Laura Garcia and Sandra Gutierrez, wrote Teatro Chicana: A Collective Memoir and Selected Plays, which has won numerous awards. The book is available here: http://libpac.sdsu.edu/search/X?SEARCH=%28Teatro%20Chicana%20A%20Collective%20Memoir%20and%20Selected%20Plays%29&SORT=D

Since its formation, the troupe has operated under different names, including Teatro Laboral (1975) and Teatro Raíces (1979). As of 2015, they continue to perform under the guidance of Felicitas Nuñez.
