Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains invoices a receipt for city tax and payrolls for the steamer, "Atla".

Biographical / historical:

The steamer, "Alta" was owned by the Arcata Transportation Company. According to the July 20, 1878, issue of the Vallejo Weekly Chronicle, the "Alta" was successfully launched from Bendixsen's shipyard in Eureka on July 12, 1878. The "Alta" was ninety feet long and eighteen feet beam. She travelled between Eureka and Arcata California.

The Weekly Humboldt Times documented the launch of the steamer "Alta" in the July 13, 1878, issue of their paper. The paper writes that "...as she glided into the water Mrs. Yocum, of Arcata, broke the bottle of wine over the stern and christened her the "Alta". In addition to describing the launch of the steamer, the paper also details the finer points of the ship. On the upper deck is a large cabin twenty-five feet long for the accommodation of ladies. This cabin will be upholstered and fitted with an eye to elegance and comfort.

According to the Jun 8, 1878, issue of the Weekly Humboldt Times, "The boiler and other fixtures of the Arcata Transpiration Company's new boat, arrived on the "Humboldt" Monday and was landed yesterday afternoon at Bendixsen's yard where the hull of the new boat is waiting for her machinery. We acknowledge the receipt of an invitation to take a look at the new boat and will embrace the first favorable opportunity to do so and give her such notice as she deserves. The boat has a name, but no one knows what it is but Yocum, and he won't tell.
