Wallace was active in LGBT, labor, and human rights movements from a young age, often combining his labor union advocacy with social justice movements. He founded Bay Area Gay Liberation in 1975, and later founded the Lesbian Gay Labor Alliance in the 1980s, which eventually evolved into the organization Pride at Work and affiliated with the AFL-CIO.

Scope and content:

The collection comprises writings, promotional material, training material, publications, correspondence, photographs, audio, video, realia, and other material, 1965-2011, from San Francisco gay and labor union activist Howard Wallace. Wallace was active in gay, labor, and human rights movements from a young age, often combining his labor union advocacy with social justice movements. The collection includes documents and photographs related to Lesbian Gay Labor Alliance, later known as Pride at Work, an organization he founded that is now affiliated with the AFL-CIO. Materials in the collection also document his activism in various labor union and social justice movements, including his work in union organizing, local political campaigns, and advocacy for seniors. Also included are materials related to the boycott of Coors Brewing Company in the 1970s-1990s.

Biographical / historical:

Howard Leslie Wallace was born on August 29, 1936 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He spent most of his early years living in Denver, Colorado, where he became active in human rights, LGBT, and labor movements at a young age.

By the late-1960s, he moved to San Francisco. In 1975, he founded Bay Area Gay Liberation, and led campaigns to boycott Coors Brewing Company for their discriminatory practices.

Wallace's activism often combined his labor union organizing with social justice and human rights issues. In the 1980s, he founded Lesbian Gay Labor Alliance, which eventually evolved into Pride at Work, an organization of LGBT labor union activists affiliated with the AFL-CIO.

Wallace died on November 14, 2012 in San Francisco.
