The collection consists of one box containing materials documenting the life and professional activities of Dr. Carl T. Hirota, alumnus of the UCSF School of Dentistry, class of 1934. Materials include photographs, dentistry-related artifacts, diplomas and an appointment book from 1933 belonging to Dr.Hirota.
- Biographical / historical:

Dr. Carl T. Hirota was an alumnus of the UCSF School of Dentistry, class of 1934. He was a practicing dentist with an office on Post Street in Japantown and a clinical instructor of operative dentistry, he also became a staff member of the Department of Oral Diagnosis at UCSF. He was the president of the San Francisco chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League. After the signing of the Executive Order 9066, Dr. Hirota was incarcerated in the Tanforan Assembly Center where he established a makeshift dental clinic and saw patients until everyone was transferred to Topaz Incarceration Camp in September of 1943.
He was commissioned as first lieutenant of the medical detachment of the 442nd Infantry Regiment at Camp Shelby, Mississippi on July 7, 1943. He served 30 months, as captain and dental officer at Fort Shelby, four months as a Japanese language interpreter in Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and several more months as a dental officer at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin. During this time, he was awarded the American Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He returned to San Francisco in 1946 and reestablished his dental practice.
