A.J. Edwards was an agent of the American Remount Association in Oregon during the 1940s. This collection includes stud books and receipts of mares bred to Edwards' stud horses, correspondence, photographs, and a stamp.

Background

Scope and content:

This collection covers A.J. Edwards' work with the American Remount Association during the 1940's. Information detailing the regulations and procedures of the Remount given to Edwards are included in the collection. Correspondence to A.J. Edwards for the purpose of acquiring an appointment to breed a mare to one of his studs is included, and his responses are also a part of the collection. Receipts and records for these appointment are available in the form of stud books and duplicating receipt record books. A personal stamp and photographs of Edwards are included in the collection as well.

Biographical / historical:

Arthur James Edwards, also known as A.J. Edwards, was born on March 3, 1884, in Manitoba, Canada, to a Canadian father named William Henry Edwards, and an English mother, Emma Garner. He emigrated with his family from Vancouver on the 1st of March, 1890, and arrived in Seattle. They settled in the region of Tacoma, Washington, on or around the 7th of March, 1890.

He married a Marie or Mary Jane in about 1903, and had two children: a son, Cecil L, born in approximately 1907, and a daughter, Marvel E, born in approximately 1908.

A.J. originally worked for the Oregon Statesman, a newspaper from Salem, Oregon. Here, he was known by the nickname "Art" and was known to rarely take any time off. He began on July 1, 1898, as a paper carrier at the age of 14. He rose to work in the pressroom from there, and in 1902, was put in charge of the pressroom office at the age of 18.

On September 12, 1918, Edwards registered in the draft for the First World War, though later census records show that he did not serve.

Eventually he took over the operation of the Oregon Statesman's 24-page Scott rotary stereotype press in 1927 as a foreman at 43 years old.

The Oregon Statesman announced his retirement from the paper on the 19th of September, 1940, after 42 years of service.

From here, A.J. worked as an agent for the American Remount Association during the 1940s. He handled four horses who were available as studs: Jedran, Lawrence M., Rifnas, and Stambul. His son Cecil L. married Gladys Brown Edwards in the 1940s and worked in Pomona for the American Remount. It was Cecil's work that likely got A.J. Edwards his job working with the Remount, though he stayed in Oregon.

Edwards was also registered in the draft for the Second World War, though now at age 58, he did not serve.

A later Oregon Statesman Statesman paper dated the 15th of January, 1948, announces Edwards' second retirement from the paper. It lists that he has worked nearly 50 years at this point, 43 of which as a pressroom foreman. It is likely then, that he worked at the paper again during the 1940s following his first retirement, as well as working as an agent for the Remount.

A.J. Edwards died on the 6th of May, 1963 in Clackamas, Oregon at 79 years old.
