Employee records and correspondence relating to James Matthew Jackson, locomotive engineer for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. Mr. Jackson began his service with the AT&SF in 1910 and retired in 1945. He worked in Needles, Barstow and Seligman, Arizona.

Biographical / historical:

James Jackson also known as James Matthew Jackson was born on May 5, 1884 or 1887 in Tangier, Indiana and died May 9, 1968, in Lodi, California. He was the son of Elihu/Eli Jackson and Louisa [Smith] Jackson.

Jackson was employed by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. The Santa Fe Employee Certificate states that he was employed on the Western Division as a road fireman starting on November 1910. At the time of his World War I Draft Registration card, he was employed by the railroad in Newton, Kansas. He was employed with Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad in Needles, California at the time of his 1942 WWII Registration. The draft registration card states that he does not have a middle name. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Needles Masonic Lodge.

He was married to Dorthea and had one son, James Hubert.

Jackson had moved from Needles to Lodi, California ten years prior to his death and is buried in the Ione Public Cemetery in Amador County, California.
