Letters Stiles E. Forsha wrote to his wife Adeline Stanley Forsha, brother-in-law Isaac Stanley, brother Alexander Forsha, and other family members. The letters depict the life of a Union officer and military operations from 1861 to 1863, including the Siege of Corinth, Mississippi in 1862. Also included is a manuscript memoir signed "Pioneer" recounting the author's journey from Fort Kearny, Nebraska, to Black Hills, South Dakota, via Fort Sidney, Nebraska. The memoir was written by Adeline Stanley Forsha, probably in 1877.

During the American Civil War, Stiles E. Forsha served as a Lieutenant in the 7th Iowa Regiment, Company I. In August 1861 he was appointed Quartermaster, and in November 1862, Commissary of Subsistence of the United States Volunteers. He resigned in 1863. After the war, the Forsha family moved West and settled in Southern California. Stiles E. Forsha died in Pasadena in 1911.
