Richard B. Pearce was an immunology researcher and AIDS transmission awareness advocate. This collection contains correspondence with U.S. and international AIDS researchers, including Marcus Conant, Donald Abrams, and Selma Dritz. Correspondence with people with AIDS, writings (reports, papers, news articles) by Richard Pearce, and various publications on AIDS.

Richard B. Pearce (1950-2018) received his B.A. from the University of Colorado in 1971 and a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1979. After earning his Ph.D., he went on to lead research in the early 1980s that linked HIV to AIDS, focusing on the role of a parasitic disease as a co-factor. He published scientific papers on the subject and advocated for behavioral changes within the gay community to bring awareness about transmission risks.

- Gifted to the AIDS Research Institute by the Pearce Estate in 2018 after Richard Pearce's death and transferred to the UCSF Archives and Special Collections by Peggy Ghertner from the Institute for Global Health Sciences in 2021.

Collection is open for research. The UCSF Archives and Special Collections policy places access restrictions on material with privacy issues for a specific time period from the date of creation. Access to records that contain personal and confidential information about an individual or individuals is restricted for 75 years from date of creation or until the death of the individual mentioned in the records, whichever is longer. Access to medical records is restricted for 100 years from the latest date of the materials in those files. Restrictions are noted at the series level. This collection will be reviewed for sensitive content upon request. Contact the UCSF Archivist for information on access to these files.
