Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains booklets, pamphlets, magazines, photographs, news clippings, playbills, songbooks, and other printed material relating to the Moral Re-Armament (MRA) movement.

Biographical / historical:

The Moral Re-Armament (MRA) movement was an international moral and spiritual movement that was started by Frank Buchman, an American minister, in 1938 at the University of Oxford. It was developed out of Buchman's Oxford Group, which held conferences in multiple countries and attracted thousands of participants globally. When the MRA was established in the United States in 1941, it was considered by some to be an effective way to combat communism. However, statments made by Buchman during World War II brought criticism to the group for his views on Hitler, Nazism, and fascism.

In 2001, the movement was renamed Initiatives of Change and it continues to operate in over 60 countries.
