Biographical / historical:

On April 22, 2024, a coalition of pro-Palestinian student groups established a Free Palestine Encampment on the Mario Savio Steps in front of Sproul Hall. The coalition issued three core demands: 1. The total divestment of the UC Berkeley Foundation and the UC General Endowment Pool from Israel 2. UCB-wide boycott of all products and services as specified by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. 3. UC Berkeley and its researchers will sever all ties to Israeli academic and cultural institutions. (source: UC Berkeley BDS Coalition Statement) On May 14, 2024, an agreement was reached which led to the encampment being dismantled. Chancellor Carol Christ issued a letter, calling for an investigation to ensure Berkeley's Foundation and endowment funds avoid investing in companies that are complicit in, or derive profit from, serious human rights violations. Christ rejected calls for the university to directly target Israel through divestment or cutting ties with Israeli universities. Instead, she said the university would review complaints about discrimination against Palestinians and other groups in academic partnerships such as exchange programs.
