Scope and content:

This collection comprises photograph albums, scrapbooks, home movies, and other material, circa 1940-2023, from gay couple James Clatfelter and Grant Lloyd. The two met at the Gay Community Services Center in Los Angeles in 1973, and moved in together shortly thereafter. The collection materials document their lives together for over a 50-year period living in California, as well as travels abroad. Home movies in the collection document their lives before and after they met in 1973.

Biographical / historical:

James William Clatfelter was born on June 5, 1940 in Los Angeles, to Madge and Walt Clatfelter. Jim grew up in Los Angeles and after attending college, worked as a nurseryman in the UCLA Japanese Garden. Both he and his sister Jan came out as gay and lesbian around the same time.

Grant Thomas Lloyd was born to Letha and Don Lloyd on June 21, 1943 in Independence, Kansas. He grew up in rural Kansas and later Seattle, Washington. His parents divorced when he was a child, and he then lived with his aunt and his mother. After Grant graduated high school, the three moved to Los Angeles. After college, Grant became the Internal Medicine and Surgery editor for the Audio-Digest Foundation.

Jim and Grant met on May 21, 1973 at the Gay Community Services Center in Los Angeles. They moved into an apartment together in Hollywood, California in June of 1973. They lived there until September 1976. From October 1976 to August 1984, they lived in Glendale, California. Then from September 1984 to February 1992 they lived together in Placerville, CA. From February 1992 to June 2008 they lived in Santa Maria, California, and from June 2008 to February 2010 they lived in Palm Springs, CA. In February 2010, they moved back to Santa Maria, and lived there until June 2015. Grant and Jim were legally wed on June 21st, 2008.

In June 2023, Jim and Grant celebrated the 50th anniversary of their first date.

As of January 2024, they continue to live in Santa Maria, California.
