Abstract:
Center for Health Justice (CHJ) is a community-based organization located in downtown Los Angeles that serves people impacted by incarceration. CHJ provides a variety of programs to currently and formerly incarcerated youth and adults in Los Angeles County. The organization provides ex-offender and inmate services related to HIV education/prevention, mental health services, and other health services for LGBT men and women incarcerated or paroled from the Los Angeles County jail system. The collection, 1975-2018, contains materials related to the administration, fundraising, and programming of CHJ, as well as personal and professional materials from CHJ's long-time executive director Cajetan Luna.

Scope and content:

The collection consists of records, documents, correspondence, and ephemera related to the administration, day-to-day operation, and development of the Center for Health Justice's programming and services. The collection also contains personal and professional materials from the CHJ's long-time Executive Director Cajetan Luna, including photographs, slides, and negatives; writings and publications; and correspondence.

Biographical / historical:

The Center for Health Justice (CHJ) is a community organization with a focus on serving people impacted by incarceration; providing health education, trauma-informed services, and assistance with community reintegration after release from custody; with a focus on LGBTQ people and people of color.

Founded in 1999 as the Corrections HIV Education and Law Project (CorrectHELP) within the Tides Center, the organization became an independent 501c3 in 2004. In 2006, it became the Center for Health Justice. While CHJ has long supported incarcerated people, it has expanded its original focus on HIV/AIDS to include mental health services, substance use counseling, and support for chronic health conditions, including hepatitis C.
