Background

Scope and content:

Set of two manuscript ledgers (one ledger book and one day book) for the Mariposa Hotel in Mariposa, California, near Yosemite National Park dated from 1890 to 1895. The ledger book is dated from February 9th, 1890, and has 276pp plus 12 unnumbered leaves of index and around 20 unused pages. The day book is dated from April 1st, 1890 to November 1st, 1893, and has 274pp and around 45 unused pages

Biographical / historical:

The Mariposa hotel was built at the site of the original Pine Tree Hotel, a landmark of the area. The Mariposa Hotel was built in 1859 by John F. McNamera, destroyed by fire in 1866, and rebuilt in 1867 by Herman Schlegeter. The name "C. A. Schlageter" on the spine of these ledgers refers to Charles Albert Schlageter, the proprietor of the hotel and son of Herman and Barbara Schlageter. These ledgers provide great insight into the daily workings of the hotel. The Day-Book shows the payouts for hotel necessities such as meat, cord wood and cleaning of the guest's sheets. The ledger book shows accounts for guests, long term residences, and businesses such as Oakland Pickle Works, Crocker & Co. Etc.
