William Vernon "June Bug" Baird, Jr. (11/7/1909 - 1-7-2002) was born in Strathmore, California to William Vernon Baird and Mildred Amelia Cook. Baird attended Strathmore Union High School, class of 1928, and graduated with a vocational degree in 1930 from California Polytechnic School in San Luis Obispo, majoring in Aviation.
Baird was a pilot who flew for Fairchild Aerial Surveys for over twenty years. Other than a brief stint between 1943 and 1944 with Lockheed Aircraft Corporation where he test-flew a variety of aircraft, he was employed by Fairchild from 1938 to 1960. Born in Strathmore, Tulare County, California, he flew for Burbank-based Fairchild and also served as their Chief Pilot, Manager of Operations, and Manager of Airport Operations. Photos in this collection document his jobs in California as well as Guatemala and Ecuador, and projects he oversaw as Chief Pilot in other countries around the world.
He married Margaret Mildred Maird nÊe Morrison. Baird passed away in January 2002 and is interred in Lindsay, California.
Fairchild Aerial Surveys was a commerial aerial photography firm operating out of California and New York that captured thousands of photos before it went out of business in 1965.
