Scope and content:

Album containing ten photos of streets, market place, and special buildings of Montevideo, Uruguay, issued by Bate y Ca. during the 1870s. Photographs are mounted on cardboard supports, hinged with green cloth binding, and arranged accordion-style. Verso of last photo contains a copy of a newspaper clipping describing the operations of the firm Bate y Ca., initially founded in Montevideo in 1860 by pioneering photographer George Thomas Bate (1835-1882). The firm was purchased by Juan Van der Weyde in 1867, and operated thereafter as "Bate y Cia. W".
