Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains the organizational records of the University of California Marching Band. Materials include administrative files such as correspondence, clippings, financial records, information and policy documents, and committee files, including records from the Stunt Committee and Executive Committee. Performance and tour files include documentation from the Band's performances on UC Berkeley campus, in addition to tours nationally and internationally, including the 1970 Japan World Exposition. The collection contains promotional and press material including show programs, newsletters, media guides, and songbooks. Photographs and audiovisual material document band performances from campus events as well as shows on tour.

Biographical / historical:

The University of California Marching Band, or Cal Band, is the official band of UC Berkeley. Cal Band was established in 1891, making it one of the oldest college marching bands on the West Coast. The Cal Band is entirely student-run. All members hold power in the policies and functions of the Band and are responsible for leadership roles, show planning, and logistical coordination. The Cal Band is known for their high-step marching style and perform at athletic events, campus gatherings, and community activities. The Cal Band's repertoire includes university fight songs, traditional marching pieces, and contemporary music.

Acquisition information:
Original transfer in 1968. Additions were made in 1970, 1975, 1985, 1990, and 2008. 2011 addition transferred by William Colescott.
Processing information:

Processed by Jessica Tai in 2024. Materials were rehoused in archival boxes and described at the file level. Some materials have been retained in their original folders.

Arrangement:

Materials within this collection maintain the original physical organization found at time of acquisition. Collection is described at the file level. Material is arranged into the following series: 1. Administrative files, 2. Performance and tour files, 3. Executive committee files, and 4. Photographs, audiovisual material, and objects. Material is arranged alphabetically by folder title within each series, except photographs, audiovisual material, and objects, which is organized by format.
