Abstract:
The Office of the Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities records document the oversight and coordination of the arts and humanities departments and programs; as well as academic planning and accreditation materials created during Stanley Chodorow's tenure as Dean. Dean Chodorow served as the campus Accreditation Liaison Officer through the accreditation process.

Scope and content:

The Office of the Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities contains the administrative and organization files for the School of Arts and Humanities and the departments administered by the office. The records include a substantial amount of subject or "working" files and on-campus committee files.

Stanley Chodorow served on several committees and was appointed Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Planning. A large portion of the records represent his responsibilities developing long-range academic plans for campus curriculum programs. Outside of his role as Dean, Chodorow also served as Accreditation Liaison Officer for UC San Diego. The records include a large selection of materials documenting the accreditation of UC San Diego from various agencies.

Arranged in five series: 1) ACADEMIC PLANNING, 2) ACADEMIC PLANS, 3) COMMITTEES, 4) SUBJECT FILES, and 5) CAMPUS ACCREDITATION.

Biographical / historical:

The Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, reporting directly to the Executive Chancellor for Academic Affairs, is the academic-administrative leader of the School of Arts and Humanities. Comprised of six large academic departments: History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Theatre & Dance, and Visual Arts. The School administers several undergraduate and graduate programs, including several foreign language programs, Classical Studies, and Ethnic Studies. Other units involving Arts and Humanities faculty and oversight of the Dean include: Institute of Arts and Humanities (IAH), Mandeville Center, the University Art Gallery, and affiliated external entities including the La Jolla Playhouse and the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus.

In 1985, the position of Dean of Arts and Humanities was expanded from the former position of Dean of Arts and Sciences. Stanley Chodorow became the first Dean of Arts and Humanities between 1985-1994. At this time, the Dean was also charged with function as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Planning.

Deans have included: Stanley A. Chodorow (1985-1994), Frantisek Deak (1994-2004), Michael A. Bernstein (2005-2007), Eric Van Young (Interim, 2007-2008), Seth Lerer (2009-2014), Christina Della Coletta (2014-current).
