- Biographical / historical:

F. L. Allard Jr. was born on June 30, 1928, in Los Angeles, CA. He earned bachelor's and master’s degrees from Fisk University in Nashville, TN, and served as a medic in the California National Guard and was sent to Japan in 1951. He returned to Japan in 1959 to teach at Kobe University. He moved to Carmel in 1976 and set up The Nippon Nook, a Japanese specialty stamp shop. The shop was located on San Carlos between 7th and 8th, in Bell Tower Court. He had one daughter, April. Allard died on July 16, 2001. The Douglas Camps was a sleepaway summer camp; sessions were held for boys and girls. Treasure Cove was a sleepaway camp for girls ages 9-15. Douglas School for Girls was a boarding school located in Pebble Beach, for grades K-12. Santa Catalina School for Girls was a boarding school located in Monterey, for grades 1-12. Santa Catalina School’s “La Concha” and Carmel High School’s “The Chameleon” were literary magazines that included original compositions by the students.
