This collection shows the development of relationships between Union Pacific management, its employees, labor organizations, and all levels of government. The Superintendent of the California Division carried a wide variety of projects in cooperation with businesses, public utilities,government entities, other railroads and individuals to their mutual benefit. This included constructing, improving and retiring bridges, culverts, pipe lines, right of way fences and roadbeds, stations and buildings. It also includes the purchase and sale of real estate.

Biographical / historical:

The Union Pacific Railroad arrived in California in 1905 through its partnership with another railroad, The San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad Company. Incorporated in Utah on March 20, 1901 between to construct a route to operate between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City via Las Vegas. The railroad came under Union Pacific control in 1903 when Union Pacific purchased a half interest in SP, LA & SL from Senator Clark. The two companies agreed to proceed jointly in the construction of the line and it opened in 1905. Clark sold his remaining half to Union Pacific in 1921. The Los Angeles and Salt Lake remained the official name of the "Salt Lake Route," until it was formally merged into the UP (effective January 1, 1988).
