The attached container listing of the Melvin Calvin papers is adapted from one created by the National Archives and Records Administration for Record Group 434, Subgroup: Department of Energy, Office: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Series: Records of Dr. Melvin Calvin, Accession Number: 9NNS-434-90-003. Bancroft Library staff added some dates and additional folder headings for clarification.

Biographical / historical:

Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley and Director of the bio-organic chemistry group at the Lawrence Radiation National Laboratory. Professor Calvin received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1961 for identifying the path of carbon in photosynthesis.

Acquisition information:
In 1989 the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) declassified several collections at The Bancroft Library, including the papers of UC faculty members in the departments of Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, and Mathematics. In the case of Melvin Calvin, NARA returned primarily photocopies to the Library.
