Abstract:
Two certificates issued to Henry C. Barri for completion of the American Locomotive Company-General Electric Electric Locomotive School (1951) and Southern Pacific's Comprehensive Schematic Print Reading on Diesel Locomotives Course (1955). Five certificates of longstanding membership (25, 35, 40, 45 and 50 years) in the International Association of Machinists, later the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. To these certificates are attached five pins.

Scope and content:

Two certificates issued to Henry C. Barri for completion of the American Locomotive Company-General Electric Electric Locomotive School (1951) and Southern Pacific's Comprehensive Schematic Print Reading on Diesel Locomotives Course (1955).

Five certificates of longstanding membership (25, 35, 40, 45 and 50 years) in the International Association of Machinists, later the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

To these certificates (25 year, 35 year, 40 year, 45 year) are attached pins.

Biographical / historical:

Henry C. Barri, a native of California, was born in 1909 and passed away in September 1994. He is buried in the East Lawn Memorial Park, Sacramento, Sacramento County, California. After 47 years, Barri retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad Company as a Master Machinist.

In 1948, Barri was elected as the assistant general chairman of the Machinists District 80, comprised of 11 western states. Officers of the union, representing 4600 machinists on the Southern Pacific, Northwestern Pacific and San Diego, Eastern an Arizona Railroads.

In 1954, while Barri was the president of Local 536 International Association of Machinists, the group chose Mrs. Edith Grimes, a woman who lost her eyesight in 1953, with the opportunity to receive a seeing eye dog and a month's long training course. Grimes, received a dog named Lady, and a month long training course at the Guide Dog School in Burbank, California operated by the International Association of Machinist. The Local 536 IAM was comprised entirely by machinists at the Southern Pacific Sacramento Shops and defrayed the entire cost of the dog and the training program.
