Background

Scope and content:

Photographs (prints are only those filed with the negatives), negatives. Photographs made by Don Chaput and Bill Cumiford of the Museum's History Division staff during July 1984 and 1986 field trips to the Oriental gold mine in Sierra County, CA., near the town of Allegheny. A number of these artifacts from the mine have been donated to the Museum (A.10938.84) by Donald Dickey, who owns the mine property. The Oriental mine began operations in the 1860s, was most active at the turn of the century, and ore was still mined there in the 1990s. There are also some views of China Camp (the Gold Star mine) and the Del Norte stamp mill.
