Background

Scope and content:

The majority of the collection is verse and prose, almost all of which was authored by Bliss Carman (1861-1929). One poem was authored jointly by Carman and Mary Perry King (born 1865), and two are credited entirely to King. The collection also contains correspondence, the majority of which is addressed to Carman. Correspondents include Jane Addams, Hamilton Wright Mabie, Walter Gilman Page, Charles J. Rosebault, Dudley Allen Sargent, and Charles Hanson Towne.

Biographical / historical:

Bliss Carman (1861-1929) was a regional poet of both the Maritime Provinces, where he was born, and the New England area of the United States, where he passed away. Between 1893 and 1905, Carman published almost twenty volumes of verse, some of which were a collaborative effort with Richard Hovey (1864-1900). Carman also wrote prose works on various subjects and, from 1890 onwards, worked as an editor for numerous journals in New York City.
