Background
- Scope and content:
-
This collection contains approximately 900 (8"x10") aerial photographs of Southern California, including views from as far north as Santa Barbara to as far south as La Jolla. Includes images of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Santa Monica, San Pedro, Palos Verdes, Newport Beach, Oceanside, Pasadena, Catalina Island, Seal Beach, Redondo Beach, and Huntington Beach, among others. Almost all are labeled and dated on the back, with the vast majority dating from 1933-1940. The collection emphasizes manufacturing and industry (particularly oil fields and refineries), flood control, and shoreline development, but also includes shots of business districts and recreational locales (e.g., country clubs, hotels, civic auditoriums). The community of Long Beach is especially well represented.
The original owner of the collection was an architect from Long Beach, but it is unknown what relationship (if any) these photographs had to his professional work, and whether he commissioned the photographs himself or collected them from outside sources. Most were produced by the Watson Airfoto Company of Long Beach. The Long Beach Blueprint Company and the H. Harold Fisher Company are also represented.
