Background

Scope and content:

The "esposos Millan-Huber", for whom the album was prepared, may have been honeymooners visiting Montevideo, or travelers celebrating an anniversary. The opening photos of the port of Montevideo include a view of ships in the harbor, probably Pennsylvania class armored cruisers; the esplanade; the Fortaleza General Artigas; and the Cerro de Montevideo. There are several shots of the fountain and promenades in the Plaza de Independencia. Especially striking are views of prominent civic buildings, including Casa de Gobierno, Cabildo, Intendencia Municipal, and Teatro Solís, and the Plaza de Cagancha, and Plaza Constitución. Also included are several views of Parque Rodó, and the Carnaval parade of horse carriages and open cars along Playa Ramirez. The photographer has captured scenes of sea bathers at Playa de los Pocitos, lined with rows of beach tents on the sand, and closer to the sea, rows of beach huts on wheels, or cabanas. His photos of Balneario de Carrasco include wide tree-lined avenues leading to the oceanside community of summer villas, the Hotel del Balneario Carrasco under construction, and the park and beach. There are also views of the tree-lined avenues of el Prado, such as Avenida Bouchental, the rose garden, the Parque Hotel on Playa Ramirez, the racetrack Hipódromo Nacional de Maroñas, and two photos of the intricate designs traced in lights during Carnaval.
