The collection consists primarily of letters, documents and one volume related to the claim of Elbert P. Jones's heirs, particularly Mrs. Anna M. R. Jones, to Yerba Buena Island, California (approximately 1901 to 1914). The collection also includes records of transfer and diagrams of lots of land in San Francisco sold by Elbert P. Jones, from 1848 to 1851.

Elbert P. Jones (1814-1852) was an early San Francisco lawyer, businessman, and prominent real estate investor. Jones was born in Kentucky and traveled overland to San Francisco, California, in 1846. He was trained as a lawyer and became the first editor of the California Star, San Francisco's first newspaper and second proprietor of Portsmouth House Hotel. Jones was elected to the San Francisco town council in 1847, and in the same year, married former Brooklyn passenger Sarah Kittleman. Jones moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where he died in 1852.
