Biographical / historical:

Lynton R. Kistler was a pioneering lithographer who printed the work of 20th-century artists from Jean Charlot to Mollard Sheets and Wayne Thiebaud. Kistler was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 30, 1897. He died at the age of 96 on November 16, 1993. A Los Angeles native, Kistler attended Hollywood and Manual Arts high schools and served in the Army in World War I. Kistler’s studio was born from his father’s lithotype studio of 30 years, where he began exploring lithography as an art medium. His studio was on Patricia Avenue in Cheviot Hills, where the printing renaissance was started. An early exhibit of his prints was shown at Stendahl Gallery, on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, in 1936. His prints chronicled the art in early Los Angeles and his watercolors documented early historical landscapes. Kistler taught lithography at UCLA Extension and in 1950, published the book titled “How to Make a Lithograph.” The artist was a very important figure in the Los Angeles art community having printed the works of Lorser Feitelson, Helen Lundeberg, Beatrice Wood, Hans Burkhardt, Eugene Berman, Clinton Adams, Palmer Schoppe, and others.
