Background

The collection includes papers from the estate of Monika Kehoe (1909-2004). Dr. Kehoe is known for her work on aging lesbians, including her book “Lesbians Over 60 Speak for Themselves.” Prior to this work, she was an educator who focused on English as a second language and taught English literature and applied linguistics in the United States, Korea, Japan, Australia, Ethiopia, Canada, and Guam. During World War II, she was recruited by the War Relocation Authority and worked at the Japanese incarceration camp at Gila River in Arizona. Dr. Kehoe had romantic relationships with women throughout her life and identified publicly as a lesbian beginning in the 1970s. The papers include awards, resumes and curricula vitae, newspaper clippings, a 1990 letter and poem, and photographs documenting Kehoe’s personal and professional life.
