Series 1. City directories, 1850-1990
- Dates:
- 1850-1990
- Scope and content:
-
This series contains city directories for the city of Sacramento, surrounding suburban and rural areas, Citrus Heights, and Roseville. They date from 1850 to 1990. Entries are listed by individual or business name and include their residence, business address, and additional information, such as their occupation, whether they rent or own their home, and their spouse's name. Some of the earliest directories note where people came to Sacramento from. The latest directories include phone numbers. Directories also include business listings. Starting in 1914, city directories also include a reverse directory with addresses listed by street name. Beginning in the late 1950s, two separate directories were published for the city proper and the suburban areas. In the 1960s and 1970s, a separate Roseville/Citrus Heights directory was published.
