Background

Scope and content:

The collection documents the work of Dina Boyer, a transgender woman who created the public access television show, “Tranny Talk,” in San Francisco, CA. Please note that the title of the show includes a term that, at the time, was used within the LGBTQ community by some trans people as friendly slang. The term is now, however, widely considered a slur. The term is used here in historical context only, to accurately document the show's title and the terms historical actors used for themselves. The show was broadcast from S.F. Community Access Studios in the late 1990s and 2000s. The show was created by and featured transgender people. Boyer’s partner, Nadia Cabazas (aka Kitty Kastro), was co-creator of the show. Michelle DeMarco worked on the show, helping to secure releases for on-air guests. Boyer also worked as a photographer and journalist and documented San Francisco events and various subjects, including political demonstrations, trans events, nature and wildlife, and others. Boyer died in December 2019. The collection includes audiovisual recordings, including show VHS tapes, DVDs, high8 tapes, and other mediums; recordings of cultural and political events, demonstrations, performances, trips, and interviews; audiovisual material related to Nadia Cabazas; Boyer personalia; computer media; newspaper clippings and notebooks; and tape logs.
