Scope and content:

Scrapbook documenting visit of Mikhail Gorbachev at Stanford on June 4, 1990. Album presented to Donald Kennedy on his tenth anniversary as President of Stanford University from the Stanford Board of Trustees and his staff on October 8, 1990. Scrapbook album contains official event program, newspaper clippings from Stanford newspapers as well as other Bay Area and national papers, photographs of the event, a commemorative USPS postal envelope, and letters from George P. Shultz.

Biographical / historical:

Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev was born March 2, 1931. He served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991, and as the country's head of state from 1988 until its dissolution in 1991 (titled as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from 1988 to 1990 and President of the Soviet Union from 1990 to 1991). On June 4 he visited the Stanford campus and gave an address at Memorial Auditorium.
