- Biographical / historical:
-
The University of San Diego School of Law began accepting applications in April 1954 and graduated its first eight students in 1958. The School of Law was accredited by the American Bar Association in 1961 and joined the Association of American Law Schools in 1966. In 1996, the School of Law joined the Order of the Coif, an honorary scholastic society for legal education. By 1973, enrollment had reached 877 students.
While part of the University of San Diego, the School of Law was largely independent until the merger of the College for Women and College for Men in 1973. Prior to that, the Dean of the Law School dealt directly with the Bishop of the Diocese of San Diego, who was also the President of the College for Men. Upon the merger, the Dean reported to the President of the merged University.
The School of Law offered two separate programs, day and evening. The evening program catered more to local, currently employed students. In the summer of 1973, the school launched a six-week law study program in Paris which was devoted to international and comparative law. A law program in Guadalajara, Mexico began the next summer. Also in 1974, the Board of Visitors was established which served as a channel of communication between the law school and the local bar association and the public.
By 2017 the School of Law continues to educate approximately 800 Juris Doctor and graduate law students each year and is known for business and corporate law, constitutional law, intellectual property, international and comparative law, public interest and taxation.
