Record Series 232 contains publications of UCLA's Linguistics Department. Files include working papers in phonetics; information brochures about the program and the Linguistics Institute of 1966; and some volumes of the journal Linguistics.

Biographical / historical:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Los Angeles began as an interdepartmental Master of Arts program in 1960. In 1962 a doctoral program was implemented, with a Bachelor's program following in 1965. The Center for Research in Languages and Linguistics was founded in 1963, leading to the formal development of the Department of Linguistics in 1966 when the Center was dissolved.

The Department of Linguistics specializes in theoretical linguistics, experimental linguistic phonetics, and African and Indigenous American (also known as Native American or American Indian) languages.
