Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains one small photograph album, containing 35 photographs of Samoa at the turn of the twentieth century contained on black paper.

From the dealer's description:

Black paperback album containing 35 black and white photographs of scenes in Samoa, most likely taken by an officer posted at the Tutuila Naval Station in Pago Pago, Tutuila Island (now American Samoa). Photos include the ships U.S.S. Adams and the French cruiser Prolét; scenic views featuring palms, mango, breadfruit, coconut, and banyan trees, as well as sugar cane used for roof thatching; interiors and exteriors of the album owner's home; the Commandant's House; and the naval station and wharf. The photos also show native villages and events, including thatched roof houses such as the chief's home in Utulei village; Samoan washerwomen; indigenous women and children; Tui-Manua, the senior hereditary high chief of Manua Island; a birthday celebration; dancers for "Siva Siva"; and a wedding procession. Locations pictured include Pago Pago, Utulei, Nu'uuli, and Fatu-ma-Futi seastacks. Photos are primarily 4.25x6.5 in.
