Background

Scope and content:

Twelve albumen prints that document Jamaica during the early 20th century. They depict sugarcane fields and laborers, local housing structures, pineapple fields, women traveling to a market carrying baskets of fruit, landscape images showing the local flora, and the Castleton Botanical Gardens. Six of the prints were produced by J. W. Cleary; they are marked with the photographer's studio stamp and have handwritten captions in pencil on the verso. The other six prints were produced by H.S. Duperly and have the photographer's studio stamp on the verso, but no captions. Content Warning: some of the captions use harmful and outdated language to describe the subjects of the photographs.

Biographical / historical:

J.W. (John) Cleary operated a photography studio located at 89 King Street, Kingston, Jamaica. E.W. Elliot became his partner in the firm at some point in the late 1800s or early 1900s.

H.S. (Henry Sylvester) Duperly operated a photography studio in Kingston, Jamaica. H.S. Duperly was related to the Duperly Brothers firm (formerly A. Duperly and Sons) and may have established his own firm around 1903. He owned a considerable amount of A. Duperly and Sons negatives from which he made and sold photographic postcards.
