A collection of approximately 10,000 items from 1929 to 1986, it consists of William A. Ringler's professional correspondence and research notes. The collection includes bibliographies, various indices, including first line indices of English verse, lectures, research notes and microfilm of manuscripts from other research libraries. The material was originally stored in multiple metal filing cabinets and card files; after Ringler's death, this material was removed to storage cartons and various other storage boxes and Ringler's original order was retained, where possible.

William Andrew Ringler, Jr. (1912-1987) literary scholar and educator was born in New Jersey. Ringler was Professor of English at the University of Chicago from 1962 to 1979, Senior Research Associate at the Henry E. Huntington Library from 1979 to 1987, and faculty associate at California Institute of Technology from 1982 to 1987. Ringler was the author of works on Renaissance and Elizabethan literature, including "The Poems of Sir Philip Sidney" (1962), and "Bibliography and index of English verse" (1988). Ringler died in Pasadena, California, in 1987.
