Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains the script, publicity materials, and press coverage for "Lavender Lockeroom," a play by F. Allen Sawyer. It also includes videorecordings of two performances presented by the Hot Pants Homo Players and Theatre Rhinoceros in May and October 2002. Lawrence Helman's press release states: " 'Lavender Lockeroom' completes the trilogy Sawyer started with 'Hot Pants Homo' and 'Senator Swish.' It is F. Allen Sawyer's mission to reclaim the gay pulp novels of the 50s and 60s. Despite their homoeroticism, these vintage times usually ended with the main character converting to heterosexuality, or worse committing suicide. Sawyer adds a modern gay sensibility to his stories while retaining all of the campy carnality."

Biographical / historical:

Frederic Allen Sawyer, Jr. was born on January 1, 1957. In the late 1970s he was the manager of the Castro Theatre; in the 1990s and 2000s, he was the box office manager at Theatre on the Square, also in San Francisco.
