The Balboa Park Stadium was built from 1914-1915 in the southern section of Balboa Park between 14th Street and Russ Street. Its first official sporting event was a track meet during the Panama-California Exposition on May 31, 1915. The stadium was later used by San Diego High School and became known as the Glenn R. Broderick Field. It was closed to school events in 1977 and demolished on August 10, 1979.
The California-Pacific International Exposition took place between May 29, 1935 and September 9, 1936. Preparations for the Exposition included electrical wiring, building additions, roofing, road paving, and other improvements made to ensure permanent usage of the buildings in Balboa Park. Features of the Exhibition included several Palaces which functioned as exhibit halls, play areas for children, motion pictures, and technological and architectural displays.
William Lingo was an employee of the City of San Diego’s engineering department. He was involved in Balboa Park development in the 1970s and 1980s.
