Description
The Tamotsu Shibutani papers consist of Shibutani's personal research and publications mostly from his time spent as a professor of sociology from the late 1950s to the mid-late 1960s.
Background
Tamotsu (Tom) Shibutani was a professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was born in 1920 in Stockton, California, to Japanese immigrants. In 1942, Shibutani and his family were sent to the Tule Lake Japanese internment camp. After this incarceration, Shibutani went on to serve for two years in the United States army during World War II, after which he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
