Biographical Note
Tamotsu (Tom) Shibutani was a professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He
was born in 1920 in Stockton, California, to Japanese immigrants. In 1942, Shibutani and his family were sent to the Tule
Lake Japanese internment camp. After this incarceration, Shibutani went on to serve for two years in the United States army
during World War II, after which he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
Shibutani moved to the University of California, Berkeley, in 1951 where he wrote his first book
Society and Personality, published in 1961, the same year he came to the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he continued his studies
in sociology and philosophy. His research collaborations with colleagues included studies on race relations, rumors and communication,
and theoretical perspectives about other social processes. He published numerous other articles and books throughout his career
that advanced the study of Symbolic Interactionism.
In 2004, Shibutani passed away in Santa Barbara, California, at 83 years old.
Scope and Content
The Tamotsu Shibutani papers were established in 2021 and presently consist of his typed drafts of published works, newspaper
and magazine clippings, handwritten notes, coursework, biliographies, correspondence, and class syllabi. Materials span approximately
from the late 1950s to mid-late 1960s.
Arrangement
Materials in the collection are kept in their original order that follows Shibutani's topics of study or interest. The collection
is described at folder level. While some materials are still housed in their original binders, each binder is referred to
as a folder in this finding aid. Single research topics or works span multiple folders and may continue into the next container.
