Background
- Scope and content:

The album opens with a panoramic view of Athens, and east and west views of the Acropolis. Most of the photos portray well-known classical ruins, such as the Parthenon, Portico of the Cariatides, Temple of Erechtheion, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, and the Doric hexastyles of the Propylaea. Also included are views of Theater of Bacchus (Dionysius) or Lenaeum, Hadrian's Gate, Temple of Jupiter (Olympieion), Temple of Theseus, and the choragic monument of Lysicrates, erected near the Acropolis by choregos Lysicrates, patron of musical performances in the Theater of Dionysius. The Doric west gate to the Roman Market in Athens, and the Gymnasium of Hadrian document the presence of the Romans in Athens. A set of caves on the Philopappou Hill purports to have been the Prison of Socrates, where the philosopher was supposedly imprisoned, and made to drink hemlock. The album concludes with photos of the Areopagus or Mars Hill, two Byzantine churches, one identified as St. Theodor, the Monument of Philopappos, site of the tomb of Caius Julius Antiochos Philopappos, a member of the royal family of Commagene, a Greek kingdom in southeast Turkey, and the Tower of the Winds (Horologion of Andronikos) in the Roman agora near the Acropolis.
