From an "Impact Statement" written by Alegria Barclay and Eleanor Sananman: "In the Spring of 2024, high school students in two different classes came together to conduct oral histories with long-term survivors living with HIV/AIDS. One class was a 12th grade history seminar entitled ‘ACT UP, FIGHT BACK–A History of the AIDS Movement’ taught by Alegria Barclay and the other class was a mixed grade introductory film class entitled ‘Cinematic Storytelling’ taught by Eleanor Sananman. The students in the history seminar spent the first half of the semester delving into the social, political, scientific, and activist history of the AIDS crisis, specifically during the ‘Plague Years.’ They then were joined by the film class students and collaborated in groups of three to interview, transcribe, and make a short film of the experiences of their narrators. In total, students worked with eight narrators who all had been living with an HIV diagnosis since the 1980s. We were intentional about seeking out a diverse group of narrators to counter the mainstream narrative that only white, cis, gay men were the primary victims of the AIDS crisis. In addition, we chose to pair, when possible, narrators with a particular racial identity with students who might share that identity."
