This collection primarily contains photographs photographic prints, photograph albums, and digital photographs taken by John Coleman of Inland Empire (Calif.) events, people, and organizations with a primary focus on the region's African American community. Also includes programs, fliers, and other materials collected by Coleman pertaining to events and organizations in the Inland Empire cities of Redlands, San Bernardino, and Riverside.

Biographical / historical:

John Coleman was born in Boston, MA in 1930. He served in the Korean War and relocated to California in 1958 to begin work at Patton State Hospital after receiving his Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. In 1968, Coleman was hired by the University of California, Riverside serving in various roles at the university (Campus Ombudsman, University Admissions Officer, Placement Officer, Medical Social Worker, and Counseling Psychologist) until his retirement in 1992. In retirement, Coleman began photographing the Inland Empire's African American community for dissemination to the local Black Press and other media outlets. During this time he became known in the region as the "community photographer" capturing thousands of photographs documenting Inland Empire people, events, and organizations for more than three decades.
