- Biographical / historical:

John Gillig was born in August 1827, in Canton, Stark, Ohio, United States, to Andrew Gillig and Catharine. They were the parents of Catharine (1823-1879), Joseph H. (1825-1901), John (1827-1901) and Maria (1834-1853). Gillig married Rebecca L. Tomb on 22 October 1857, in Seneca, Ohio, United States. They were the parents of Henry "Harry" Mansfield (1858-1909) and John A. (1865-1871). In 1879, their son, Harry M. Gillig, joined the Woodruff Scientific Expedition that traveled around the world.
Harry M. Gillig married Amy Crocker (also known as Aimée Isabella Crocker) on Jul. 11, 1889.
Gillig lived in Sacramento, California in 1860 and Virginia City, Storey, Nevada where he was a hardware merchant. In 1876, in Virginia City, Nevada, Gillig built a large building that is now known as the Gillig Block. He died on November 3, 1901, in San Francisco, California, United States, at the age of 74, and was buried in Colma, San Mateo, California, United States.
