    This collection contains one four-page letter from Walter Edward Smith to Shirley "Shirl" Smith, written aboard the USS Platte (AO 24) during the Korean War. Smith described a bombardment of the shore by the USS New Jersey, which was close enough to make the Platte shudder with each shot.
    The collection also includes a brief congratualtory note from the commander of the Platte, congratulating the crew on a job well done during a trying time.
