Student research notebooks and outgoing professional correspondence from the UC San Diego laboratory of molecular biologist and Research Professor E. Peter Geiduschek. The great majority of the collection consists of student and researcher data and notes created in Geiduschek's lab, removed from three-ring binders. The remainder of the collection includes: Geiduschek's own notebooks; correspondence (both a chronological file of outgoing correspondence from Geiduschek's lab, and an alphabetically-arranged series of other professional letters); a small series of assorted lecture, seminar and symposia notes; a series on Geiduschek's activities at UC San Diego; and a small number of subject files. The collection documents the research activities of persons in Geiduschek's laboratory, his professional communications with colleagues, and to a lesser extent, his role as a faculty member at UC San Diego Division of Biological Sciences.

- Biographical / historical:

E. Peter Geiduschek received his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and has served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals. Dr. Geiduschek is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Microbiology. He is a Research Professor and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at UC San Diego.
Geiduschek came to UC San Diego in 1970 and has stayed for the duration of his career. From his faculty profile on the UC San Diego Division of Biological Sciences website:
"The central theme of my research has been the enzymology of gene regulation, specifically of transcriptional regulation and its principal focus has been on fundamental mechanisms, approached from a molecular genetic and biochemical perspective. It is now widely appreciated that the transcriptional apparatus of all cells (archaeal, bacterial and eukaryotic) has common evolutionary roots. It follows that transcription-regulatory mechanisms should also share certain broadly similar mechanistic features. In that spirit, my laboratory worked in parallel with bacteria and their viruses, with eukaryotes, and with archaea."
Dr. Geiduschek passed away April 8, 2022.
