Scope and content:

Rebecca Ezekiel's papers contain 2 envelopes, one addressed to "Mrs. Jacob Ezekiel", with no postmark, and the other addressed to "Rebecca Ezekiel 1717 Hayes St. San Francisco Cal." from the U.S. Pension Agency of the Department of the Interior and is postmarked from San Francisco on August 19, no year given. The first letter is dated 10/18/1860, and is regarding her husbands death. The letter is signed by "M. Lynch Secretary S.F.F.D" and notes that Jacob Ezekiel passed away on 10/17/1860, and that he will be missed by the entire department, and that the department will attend his funeral dressed in mourning clothes. The second letter is 2 pages long, dated 10/19/1860 and is signed by "Henry Reese, Secretary of S.F. No. 1". The first page relates Mr. Reese's heartfelt condolences regarding the passing of Jacob Ezekiel, and the second page is a draft of resolutions from the St. Francis Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 meeting held on 10/17/1860. These resolutions state, in part, that the members of the Company will wear clothes of mourning for 30 days, they will outfit the firehouse in mourning for 30 days, and that they will write the widow (Rebecca Ezekiel) to let her know the "high esteem in which our departed brother was held". The 3 certificates are all regarding her widow's pension from the War Department, due to her husbands service in the army in 1845-1846. The first is from the Record and Pension Office of the War Department, dated 03/23/1897 and signed by F.C. Ainsworth, and states that Jacob Ezekiel served as a Sargeant in Captain Forno's Battery, Gally's Battalion, Louisiana Militia Light Artillery starting 08/19/1945 and that he mustered out of service on 11/12/1845, then he served as First Lieutenant in Captain Ricardo's Company, 4th Regiment, Louisiana Militia (changed to Comapny 1, 3rd Regiment, Louisiana Militia Infantry) starting 05/15/1846 and mustering out 08/11/1846. The second certificate is numbered "No. 10720" and is a Mexican War U.S. Widow's Pension certificate, dated 07/07/1897, confirming that Rebecca Ezekiel will receive eight dollars a month from 01/29/1887 and continuing through her widowhood due to Jacob Ezekiels service. The third certificate is also dated 07/07/1897, and relates that her Bureau of Pensions assigned attorney is Matthew Harris, and his fee is 10 dollars.

Biographical / historical:

Rebecca Ezekiel was the wife of Jacob Ezekiel, who was a prominent member of the San Francisco Fire Department until his passing on 10/17/1860.
