A collection of typewritten copies of letters between Ellen Ewing Sherman and her mother, Maria Boyle Ewing, chiefly for the period 1850 to 1859. There is some material pertaining to Thomas Ewing as well as genealogical items about the Boyle and Ewing families.

Ellen Ewing Sherman (1824-1888) was born in Lancaster, Ohio, the daughter of prominent politician Thomas Ewing and Maria Boyle Ewing; Ellen's parents also raised William Tecumseh Sherman after the death of his father in 1829. Ellen and William married in Washington, D.C. on May 1, 1850; together they had eight children. During the Civil War she worked hard to protect her husband's military standing as he faced newspaper charges of insanity. Ellen Sherman was very active in Catholic causes and took an interest in Native American missions. She died in New York City on November 28, 1888.
